ILLINOIS RIGHT TO LIFE RESPONDS TO POLL RESULTS SHOWING PUBLIC SUPPORT OF PARENTAL NOTICE OF ABORTION ACT

MARCH 15, 2021 – (Chicago) On Monday, Illinois Right to Life Executive Director Amy Gehrke responded to results of a new poll conducted by the Tarrance Group that gauged Illinois residents’ support of the Parental Notification of Abortion Act.

According to this poll of registered voters, 72% of people in Illinois believe an adult family member should be notified before a minor has an abortion. In fact, a full 58% of voters who identify as pro-choice support parental notification. Only 22% of total respondents — less than a quarter — support the repeal of Illinois’ Parental Notice of Abortion law.

“The results of this poll could not be more crystal-clear: A vast majority of Illinoisans believe that parents should be notified when their minor daughters wish to have an abortion,” said Gehrke. “As the mother of two daughters, I would have been devastated if one of my girls went through a life altering and emotionally devastating abortion with only those who seek to profit from it to support them. Obviously, the majority of Illinois residents agree.”

Support of keeping the Parental Notice of Abortion Act in place was especially high among minorities, as the poll revealed that 76% of minority women and 74% of minority men believe the law is good.

“The repeal of parental notification transcends the abortion issue,” Gehrke continues. “It strikes at the heart of parents’ rights to be a part of their children’s lives. Abortion advocates are advancing policy that is not only out-of-step with mainstream public opinion, but tramples parental rights and endangers minor girls.”
