This past fall, the story of Mary Wagner and her pro-life work was made very public. A tremendous advocate for life, Wagner spent a total of six years in prison because of her work trying to help women and their children. Just recently, she embarked on another dangerous journey to advance the cause of life in Canada, where support for abortion is very strong.
On February 19, 2021, the Supreme Court of Canada stated that they would not hear a case involving a Charter challenge to a Canadian law that currently denies the humanity of the child in the womb. The court did not give a reason for denying the hearing, only saying that they had “dismissed” the hearing.
Wagner’s lawyer, Dr. Charles Lugosi, says that he will fight on behalf of Wagner to get her case through. He explained to LifeSite news that there are a few reasons he can think of why the case was dismissed. In 1969, abortion was decriminalized in Canada by the “Omnibus Bill.” This infamous bill allowed women to get an abortion with the approval of the hospital.
Lugosi explains that “The inherent dignity of every human being in existence is violated daily by the greatest human rights abuse of all time: the mass killing of millions of innocent human beings who are at the mercy of those who hold the power of life and death over them.”
With the sole reason being that abortion is legal in Canada, Lugosi knows that it is going to be a challenge to get Wagner’s case heard, but he is not giving up. Wagner told LifeSite news that we should not lose hope.
She says, “Let us not lose sight of this truth as well: beyond the call to build a just society, ultimately it is not perfection in law that we seek but perfection of heart, which can only come through the love that is not of this world. It is this love that can change hearts even to the point where the law is no longer needed to influence our actions.”
It is love, as Wagner explains, that we need to use to fight this battle of lies and deception. She knows that it is only with love for God and love of our neighbor that people will truly see the hurt that women and their children are going through every day that has been caused by the evil of abortion.
