The Illinois House of Representatives voted late last night to repeal Parental Notice of Abortion, trampling the rights of Illinois parents and putting young girls at the mercy of human traffickers and sexual predators.

“Parental Notice of Abortion simply required abortion providers to notify parents 48 hours before their minor daughters had abortions. In Illinois, minor girls cannot get a body piercing, a tattoo, or even receive an aspirin without parental consent. Enabling children to have abortions without their parents’ involvement is simply appalling,” said Amy Gehrke, Executive Director of Illinois Right to Life.

A Tarrance Poll conducted last spring showed that 72% of Illinois voters support Parental Notice to Abortion, including 55% who identified as pro-choice. That number jumped to 76% among people of color.

“Lawmakers who voted to repeal Parental Notice of Abortion have shown they care more about doing the will of the abortion industry than respecting the wishes of their constituents. These lawmakers care more about appeasing abortion advocates than the rights of parents or the health and safety of minor girls,” added Gehrke. “Illinois Right to Life Action will be sure that these legislators’ constituents remember their egregious vote to repeal Parental Notice of Abortion next November.”

Illinois Right to Life Action is the state’s leading pro-life lobbying organization working to protect the most vulnerable from conception until natural death. Their aim is to help build a culture of life in Illinois by being a life-affirming voice in Springfield.
