"Responsible sex education" is irresponsible
Have you seen
the new television ad suggesting that "comprehensive" sex education is
responsible sex education? Encouraging teens to have casual sex may be
"comprehensive", but it is certainly not responsible. "Comprehensive,
medically-accurate, age-appropriate sex education" may sound appealing, but the
meaning of this marketing slogan is hidden from the public.
The content and goals of sex education as envisioned by Planned
Parenthood/Chicago Area and the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health are entirely
different than what most parents would expect or want. Most parents would not want
their teenage sons to be turned on and looking for sex after attending a sex education
class, but abstinence educators have witnessed that result when Planned Parenthood
got there first.
Most parents do not expect their teens to be told that any sex, any time is
perfectly OK as long as it is "consenual" and "safe", but that is the
message Planned Parenthood preaches. Since condoms are pushed as the first means of
making sex "safe", the real-world effectiveness of a condom makes sex as
safe as playing Russian roulette. The laboratory effectiveness rate of a condom
is no greater than 87% so it is significantly less effective for teens in the real world.
The web site created to support this marketing push for
"comprehensive" sex education cites studies that evaluated the content of sex
education in Illinois and found it lacking. This web site does not present any
studies to demonstrate that "comprehensive" sex education has been
found effective at reducing unwanted pregnancies and abortions, because there are no
such credible studies.
On the contrary, studies that do exist show two things. First,
abstinence education is effective in reducing unwanted pregnancies and abortions.
Second, easier access to birth control for teens increases unwanted pregnancies and
abortions. No, this is not a misprint! One study concluded that for every 1000
teens who used birth control, abortions increased by up to 120. A number of
abortionists have been quoted making statements showing they are fully aware of this
conclusion.
Planned Parenthood's claim that "comprehensive sex education and easier
access to all forms of contraception can reduce unwanted pregnancies and abortions by
50%" cannot be supported in the real world. They make the same claim about
making the morning-after pill available over-the-counter. In Sweden, England, and
other locations where over-the-counter access has been tried, the real world
experience has been a significant increase in abortions and sexually transmitted diseases,
especially among teenagers.
Planned Parenthood often claims that abstinence education is unacceptable
because it does not provide "medically-accurate" information, while their
approach is based on scientific consensus. On the contrary, in science, consensus is
irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. They cannot provide such
results to show any reduction in abortions.
However, Planned Parenthood has achieved reproducible results. Over
the last 20 years Planned Parenthood has consistently increased their market share of
abortion services from 5% to 20% of the national total. Planned Parenthood is the
nation's largest abortion provider. Their last annual report indicates Planned
Parenthood performed 255,015 abortions in 2004.
How could Planned Parenthood possibly be serious about reducing demand for
the very product where their business continues to grow by 4-10% each year? Would
any business that has increased market share from 5% to 20% actually intend to
reduce the need for that very product? Such a plan would be financial suicide!
Planned Parenthood is promoting one thing to the public (reducing unwanted
pregnancies and abortions) while selling the very thing they claim their
"comprehensive" sex education will reduce. To provide easier access to all
forms of contraceptives, Planned Parenthood offers them to 12-17 year-olds at
half price. The annual reports from Planned Parenthood clearly show that they
have failed to reduce the need for abortions among their own customers.
We can only conclude that Planned Parenthood knows very well and
actually intends for "comprehensive" sex education and easier access to
contraceptives to increase unplanned pregnancies and abortions. Planned
Parenthood has at least a 20 year track record to prove that is exactly what
happens. If more sex education and easier access to contraceptives did what they
claimed, why would Planned Parenthood's abortion services continue to rise
rapidly year after year while abortions nationwide have been declining?
