Unprecedented Opposition To An Act Of Congress

Have you heard news reports about the scope of opposition to the health care law, often referred to as ObamaCare, but officially titled The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act?  The number of states challenging ObamaCare in court as unconstitutional has risen to 27.  This scope of objections to an act of Congress by the states is unprecedented, but you would hardly notice it is happening, given the censorship imposed by the mainstream media.  Don't you think they should regularly publish a scorecard showing the number of states challenging the law?

On January 31st, U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson ruled that the individual mandate to buy health insurance is unconstitutional and, therefore, the entire health care law as well.   Vinson's ruling comes in the legal challenge to The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act initiated by the state of Florida and joined so far by 25 other states.

Virginia filed their own court challenge to defend a state law that would allow Virginia citizens to ignore the Federal mandate to buy health insurance contained in The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  In that case U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson had already ruled to strike down a portion of the law by accepting Virginia's contention that the individual mandate is unconstitutional.

As with the Virginia case, the Obama administration says it will appeal this decision to the U.S. Appeals Court based in Atlanta, Georgia.  This latest ruling increases the already high probability that the U.S. Supreme Court will choose to hear the legal challenges to the health care law.

After ObamaCare was forced through Congress last year when "pro-life" Democrats gave in to a meaningless "compromise" that failed to prevent abortion funding under this massive bill, voters had their say in November.  On January 19th, the new Congress with 63 more Republicans voted to repeal ObamaCare.  With all 242 Republicans and 3 Democrats voting for repeal, the vote was 245-189.

The mainstream media described this vote as "symbolic" and implied that it was meaningless.  However, this vote identifies who is willing to respond to voter concerns about the huge expansion of government power established by ObamaCare.

On February 2nd, the Senate voted on the repeal bill approved by the House.  All 47 Republican Senators voted to fully repeal ObamaCare, but none of the Democrats voted for repeal, so it lost on a 51-47 vote.  Nearly half of the Senators voting to uphold ObamaCare will be up for election in 2012 so voters will get an opportunity to remember then how they voted on ObamaCare now.

Law Against Pregnancy Care Centers Found Unconstitutional

A very timely ruling was issued on January 28th.  Federal Judge Marvin Garbis in Baltimore granted summary judgment, finding that the City of Baltimore anti-pregnancy care center law is viewpoint-based, making it unconstitutional under the First Amendment and thus unenforceable.  This now unenforceable ordinance required pregnancy care centers to include information in their ads saying they do not give out the morning after pill or make abortion referrals, and required them to post signs with these disclaimers at their entrances and in patient waiting and exam rooms.

Given that similar laws are currently proposed in Washington state and New York City, this ruling may have a significant impact.  Pro-Life advocates who have been working overtime to oppose those laws appreciate this judicial support for their opposition to these intrusive laws.  Such laws are being pushed by NARAL and Planned Parenthood in a desperate attempt to overcome those who offer real choice and cost them abortion business in a big way.

How much money do pregnancy care centers make from the mothers they counsel about abortion alternatives?  Not only do they not charge any fees, but in most cases they offer mothers material help as well.  How much money do abortion providers make from mothers who seek abortions?  Abortions are recognized as highly profitable.

When accusations are made that pregnancy care centers are misleading and scaring women into keeping their babies, who is behind these accusations?  Almost always you will find NARAL Pro-Choice America, National Abortion Federation, and Planned Parenthood as the proponents of these claims.  Why should they have any credibility when they have a self-interest in abortion profits?  Can anyone seriously believe that these abortion proponents provide an independent third-party view of the facts surrounding the abortion decision and its implications for mother and baby?   Their biased efforts to attack pregnancy care centers confirm the effectiveness of those Pro-Life facilities.

Largest Ever, for Third Year in a Row

Estimates and eye witness reports both suggest that the 2011 March for Life in Washington, D.C. was the largest ever of the 38 marches held to date, with likely over 400,000 participants.  Even with such overwhelming numbers, the mainstream media did not consider this event newsworthy, because it does not comply with their immoral agenda, so they ignored it, as usual.   That is another strike against their credibility for reporting the news.

Nellie Gray, the leader of the March for Life noted from the stage before the departure of the march that she could not even see the end of the marchers stretched out before her.  At the Rose Dinner after the march Gray noted that it was the largest march in her memory.

Chicago area sent: 8 buses sponsored by the Archdiocese Respect Life Office, 3 sponsored by St. John Cantius, 2 sponsored by Illiana Right to Life, and multiple buses from the Diocese of Joliet.  Other Illinois dioceses also sent buses to Washington, D.C.  If this level of participation was any indication of the national trend, the March for Life likely exceeded previous records.

The time required for all the people to march past the Supreme Court building keeps increasing as the numbers have jumped so much in recent years: from 225,000 in 2008 to 375,000 in 2009, 400,000 in 2010, and now at least that many or more in 2011.

The first March for Life was organized in 1974.  Attendance levels went up gradually, and sometimes dipped, over the years from 1974-2007, usually ranging from 100,000 to 200,000.    Only in the last few year has attendance really taken off to the levels that we are now seeing.  Participation from the younger generation is growing rapidly.   If you have not yet attended in person, plan to get there in 2012.

President’s Report: Review of Abby Johnson’s Book: unPlanned

After hearing about a Planned Parenthood director walking away from her job and joining 40 Days for Life last October, her book sounded like the type of book a pro-life person should read.  We always wonder why anyone would want to work for Planned Parenthood.

It was a real eye-opener to learn how she was duped by promises that they wanted to help women and through contraception reduce the number of abortions.   She described herself as a person who always wanted to help people.  In fact, she was studying psychology in college and wanted to be a counselor.  This volunteer job sounded like a perfect fit.

Abby describes her life as a student at Texas A & M in Bryan Texas.  She was attracted to the PP booth because of their pink color at the volunteer fair at college.  When she volunteered, the job that she was given was as an escort to bring the clients into the clinic and avoid the pro-lifers.  She quickly rose through the ranks and ultimately became the director.   Along the way she was trained to appear on TV and radio panels, always selling PP and belittling the pro-lifers outside.

Her career at PP paralleled that of Shawn Carney and his involvement at prayer vigils at the clinic and his ultimate rise to director of Coalition for Life at about the same time she became director of the clinic.  It was also the beginning of the 40 Days for Life campaigns that began at that clinic and spread throughout the country.

When Abby first became director, she resolved to build a good relationship with the pro-lifers on the other side of the fence outside of her clinic. She was determined to be pleasant and greet them and decided not to call the police about them unless they were really breaking the law.  She saw many different approaches and got to personally know the people who demonstrated at her clinic. She thought they just didn’t understand that she was really helping women at the clinic.

The turning point in her conversion was the demand by the regional directors to keep improving the bottom line – the profits.  The only way to do that was to increase the number of abortions because that was where the money was.  She was shocked and fought with her superiors about the increases in abortion.  Then the announcement that PP was building a mega abortion center pulled the veil from her eyes.

After assisting at an abortion by guiding the ultrasound probe, it was clear that she couldn’t continue to work at the clinic.  Saying to herself, “How could I have missed seeing this for what it is?” she left the clinic and walked into the arms of the pro-lifers at the Coalition for Life office across the street.

With Abby Johnson’s testimony and the work of Lila Rose and Live Action exposing the law-breaking at Planned Parenthood, there is real hope that we can finally defund Planned Parenthood and put a stop to their use of taxpayer funds.

Further Evidence Questioning the Merits of "Brain Death"

Two recent articles raise new concerns about the accuracy of “brain death” as a reliable method to determine true death.  Given dependence on use of “brain death” as a means to successfully obtain functioning donated vital organs for transplant, these articles offer new warnings to anyone considering the decision to register as an organ donor.

A special report authored by Mercedes Arzu Wilson and published by Life Decisions International presents many historical facts about the questionable biological concept of "brain death." This report includes information regarding a number of meetings and conferences that have been held to evaluate the merits of "brain death."   It is not reassuring that many advocates in favor of "brain death" at these meetings have a serious conflict of interest because of their own involvement in the organ transplant industry.

Even more unsettling are quotes clearly indicating that professionals who support "brain death" fully recognize that patients declared "brain dead" are not truly dead.  Wilson wrote, "In fact, moments before the conference began one of the presenters admitted to me that 'brain dead' donors are alive, but since their 'quality of life' is so poor it is better for their organs to be used to save someone else's life."

Consistent with that observation, proponents of organ transplantation Dr. Franklin G. Miller and Dr. Robert D. Truog published an article in the Hastings Center Report of December 2, 2008, "Rethinking the Ethics of Vital Organ Donation," admitting that "brain dead" donors are alive and all restrictions should be removed in order to obtain more organs for transplantation.

In the second article, A prominent American professor of Catholic medical ethics has said that in “brain death” criteria there is no “moral certitude” that a patient is really dead.  Professor E. Christian Brugger, a Senior Fellow of Ethics at the Culture of Life Foundation, quoted Pope John Paul II, who told a congress on organ transplants that death is “a single event consisting in the total disintegration of that unity and integrated whole that is the personal self.”

“Although we cannot identify the event directly, we can identify biological signs consequent upon the loss of that unity,” said Brugger.  But according to many experts, those biological signs are not present in “brain death” cases.

Brugger references the research of D. Alan Shewmon, which, he says, “demonstrates conclusively that the bodies of some who are rightly diagnosed as suffering whole brain death express integrative bodily unity to a fairly high degree.”

In fact, he says, “brain dead” patients on ventilator support “have been shown to undergo respiration at the cellular level … assimilate nutrients … fight infection and foreign bodies … maintain homeostasis … eliminate, detoxify and recycle cell waste throughout the body; maintain body temperature; grow proportionately; heal wounds … exhibit cardiovascular and hormonal stress responses to noxious stimuli such as incisions; gestate a fetus … and even undergo puberty.”

All of this, says Brugger, would seem to indicate that “brain death” fails to meet Pope John Paul’s definition of death as “the total disintegration of that unity and integrated whole that is the personal self.”

Do you still feel comfortable declaring your intent to be an organ donor?  IRLC recommends against any blanket declaration to be an organ donor as is the case with the Illinois Organ Donor Registry.  To have more options, including a declaration not to be an organ donor, either complete the IRLC Organ Donation Declaration to place with your existing Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, or complete the IRLC Patient Self-Protection Document that includes the Organ Donation Declaration.

Evidence of IVF Abnormalities

The rate of abnormalities and the death rate of less than perfect embryos created through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) have been relatively hidden from view.  With recent advances in the pre-screening of embryos to eliminate those found to be deficient, more of the grim facts are being revealed.

Luca Gianaroli, chairman of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, and Cristina Magli, an embryologist from Bologna, Italy, announced their success in a study of a genetic testing procedure called "comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) by microarray."  Their announcement came after two women gave birth to healthy children following screening of their embryos using this technique.

Confirmation of the scope of babies lost came when Gianaroli said in a statement that, "We have learned from more than 30 years of IVF that many of the embryos we transfer (into the womb) have chromosome abnormalities."  He further revealed that two out of every three embryos implanted into a woman’s womb during the IVF procedure fail to develop into a pregnancy, often because of genetic abnormalities.

Of course, this new CGH screening procedure will not reduce the loss of human life during IVF, but just guarantee abnormal embryos are rejected earlier in the process, behind the scenes where the parents never know about all of their dead children sacrificed in search of healthy embryos.  The "experts" will be treating human life as a commodity all the more using the CGH procedure.

That news was followed by a report from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) on a study of IVF "efficiency."  The report concluded that just 7.5 percent of all artificially fertilized embryos go on to become live-born children.

Even this very low rate of success is overstated because it includes "the most optimistic set of assumptions that all the frozen embryos will eventually be used."  In fact, most frozen embryos will more likely be used in research or abandoned.  How many people who consider IVF are given these sorry facts about the high failure rate?   Where is informed consent?

Allowing human intervention in the creation of human beings is folly at best, and given all the human lives lost in the process, IVF is a serious moral issue, even before considering the actions to select specific characteristics for babies that are now being attempted.

Planned Parenthood Requiring Abortion At All Affiliates

How important is abortion to Planned Parenthood?  Former director of their Bryan Texas location Abby Johnson reveals that abortion provides them the funds they need to cover other less profitable services.  She makes it clear that increasing abortion profits is high priority for Planned Parenthood management.

Consistent with that goal, information about a new abortion policy leaked out when one affiliate balked.  A December 2010 news article from Corpus Christi Texas revealed that the local chapter of Planned Parenthood would drop its affiliation with the national organization and become Family Planning of Coastal Bend on January 1, 2011.

CEO Amanda Stukenberg explained that Planned Parenthood wanted to standardize its operations at all of its agencies nationwide, including a new requirement for all affiliates to perform abortions.  Since abortion was "something the Coastal Bend office didn’t see as necessary," Stukenberg said they would maintain their current services under their new name.

LifeNews.com reported on 12/23/10 that Planned Parenthood confirmed the new policy when Lisa David stated, "Abortions must be offered by at least one center operated by every Planned Parenthood affiliate."  How long will it take before they demand that EACH center run by each affiliate offer abortion?  Abby Johnson has revealed that to be their long-term goal.

Reaching that goal appears to be tied to rolling out TeleMed abortion, so far limited primarily to Iowa.  With TeleMed abortion using RU-486, the “doctor” never needs to see the “patient” except via a video screen to provide instructions and dispense RU-486.  Some states are already working to make this procedure illegal.

Are College Students Forced to Pay for Abortions as Health Care?

Students for Life of America has done a survey of 200 major universities and found that 89 of them include abortion coverage in their school-sponsored health insurance.  Even worse, 41 of these 89 colleges require their students to automatically enroll and pay for this student health insurance that covers abortions.  In these cases, students are being forced to pay into health care plans that cover abortions and are paying for their peers’ abortions.  Forcing Pro-Life college students to pay for other people’s abortions is immoral and a violation of many students’ deeply held values and beliefs.  You may want to check into this situation if you have college students in your family.

You can locate the research results from Students for Life of America at: http://www.scribd.com/doc/47398097/Students-for-Life-of-America-University-Health-Care-Study
or contact your student’s college to learn more about what their student health plan covers.
